The GOP-controlled House on July 24, 2002 passed legislation that would outlaw partial birth abortions except in cases where it is necessary to save the woman's life. The bill (HR 4965) was passed by a vote of 274-151. Critics charged that the bill may be unconstitutional. The Supreme Court struck down a Nebraska partial birth abortion law in June 2000, partly because it failed to provide exceptions protecting the health of the mother. The Senate, controlled by Democrats, is not expected to consider the bill. (6/18/02) |
