Clinton Orders Increased Federal Employment of Disabled

Citing evidence that shows qualified persons with disabilities have been refused employment despite availability and qualifications, President Clinton signed an executive order July 26, 2000, ordering the federal government to become a model employer. The order mandates that federal agencies take the lead in public education, hiring practices and outreach efforts, with a goal of hiring 100,000 qualified individuals with disabilities over the next five years. Each federal agency is required to submit a plan within 60 days detailing the strategy it will use to increase employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
